Item | # 0001859231 | Family | Cassidae | Name | Cypraecassis rufa - OLD COLLECTION GIANT , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 173 mm |
Locality | Kenya |
Note | A superb and monumental specimen from the ?old days? of collecting. The presence of the specimen is created not only by its size, but by the extensive deposition of shell material, resulting in an ultra-thick, recurved outer apertural lip, enormous heavy 'shield', and markedly thickenend shell walls. There is some typical restricted damage to the siphonal canal only, (never seen in display of the magnificent aperture). (An image of this area is available upon request.) It has been extremely well-curated during the nearly four decades since its collection, and its saturated colours, (now completely stable), appear as rich as if it had been collected this year. Very difficult to obtain like this now. For the collector of impressive big shells. Note: Postage upon this item will be ?30. Size: c. 173 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Pemba Channel, off border region of Kenya and Tanzania; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 26 m; dredged; 1980. |
