Note | An extremely large and magnificent specimen of this classic Queensland rarity. Collected upon the legendary 1990s expeditions into the Coral Sea, this is one of the BEST examples found, exhibiting an exemplary pattern in ultra-dark reddish orange upon a pure white ground. Apart from some very minor natural fraying to the outer apertural lip, the specimen is of exceptional quality. It should be noted however, that upon fully mature examples of this species, the posterior section of the outer apertural lip always exhibits a little roughness. This is NOT a flaw, and occurs upon account of this area being constantly in a state of growth throughout the life of the mollusc. In fact, wherever this characteristic is lacking, one may rightly suspect tampering by the hand of man, in order to ?clean up? the supposed ?flaw?. A select perplicata for the Volutidae specialist. Size: 73.9 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Lihou Reef, Australian Coral Sea Territory, Australia; upon coral sand/rubble substrate; at night; 14-20 m; dived; 1994. |
