Item | # 0001928243 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila gigas - BIG STUDY FRAGMENT , McCoy, 1867 |
Size | 87.9 mm |
Locality | Australia, Miocene |
Note | A very large fragment of the dorsum of the most famous and coveted fossil seashell in the world - the mythical, long-extinct GIANT Zoila of South-Eastern Australia, which may attain the almost unbelievable size of 247 mm in length. Fragments account for around ninety-five per cent of all examples found, with talented artisans often artificially reconstructing the remaining portion of the shell around them. This fragment is offered for scientific study only, however, given that the price for near complete specimens is ?15,000-20,000, this fragment may be the only affordable method for many collectors to ?tick the box? for Zoila gigas. Size: 87.9 mm (longest dimension). Data: Muddy Creek Marl Member, Hamilton, Victoria, Australia; in tertiary Miocene formation. |
