Item | # 0001929246 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Umbilia hesitata - RARE DARK BROWN (2ND) |
Size | 97.3 mm |
Locality | NE Bass Strait |
Note | This is an example of the now extremely hard to obtain dark brown or `melanistic' form of hesitata. It was previously probably in very good condition, however the former owner left it out in a shed exposed to humidity, etc, so the surface deteriorated slightly. As the shell is now, IT HAS BEEN BUFFED, IT IS NOT IN NATURAL CONDITION! NEVERTHELESS, it displays very nicely as a representative of this very rare colour form. Almost all dark brown shells were trawled or dredged in the distant past, I'm only aware of one saturated brown shell similar to this trawled in the last 20 years. The grounds where they mostly live are now not fished. Even in old collections they are scarce. Brown is even rarer than yellow, only the mythical red, pink and orange ones are rarer. No chips. One or two nacre marks on the labral side. Request higher rez photos if you like. I don't mind keeping it my own collection. |
