Item | # 0001931805 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus teramachii - ULTRA-BIG: RARE LOCALITY , Kuroda, 1956 |
Size | 99.1 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An ultra-large, extreme deep-water specimen from a rare locality. Collected during the legendary 1980s trawls off the atolls of Rowley Shoals, and now obtainable only from old collections. Few examples of this rare species were obtained, and this is certainly the cleanest specimen I have seen, with none of the usual encrustation and discoloration. Particularly beautiful colour: uniform yellowish-pinkish cream, with rich yellow-cream apertural interior. As the Conidae specialist will know, this species invariably exhibits damage upon account of its delicate shell, deep-water habitat, and the trawling process. The current specimen has one lengthy, axial, curvilinear disruption upon the dorsum, (see above right image, with further detailed image available upon request), and typical, natural roughness to the outer apertural lip, (see above left image), which has been left in its natural state, without any artificial smoothing. For the Conidae specialist whose collection yet lacks an example from this rare locality. Size: 99.1 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Rowley Shoals, 260 km West of Broome, Western Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 400-600 m; trawled; 1982. |
