Item | # 0001941357 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila thersites contraria - RARE DARK VENTRUM FORM , Iredale, 1935 |
Size | 73.1 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | The dark ventrum form of contraria is very seldom encountered, with even many Zoila specialists not fully appreciating its scarcity. In this form the typical contraria design of colouration is transmuted into a darker palette, creating a striking conrast with the pale dorsum. Its overall morphology also conforms in every aspect to the far more often encountered fully pale form. Markedly inflated pyriform. Nothing but the most insignificant natural nacre microflaws, always present upon this deep-water habitat, trawled species. Lacking in even many of the most advanced Zoila collections, and definitely for the Zoila connoisseur. Size: 73.1 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Great Australian Bight, South Australia, Australia; upon sand/mud/rubble substrate; 150-200 m; trawled; 2004. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
