Item | # 0001963345 | Family | Turbinellidae | Name | Altivasum flindersi - LIVE; ULTRA-RARE WHITE , Verco, 1914 |
Size | 140 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A magnificent ultra-large specimen of this consummate rarity. High quality Altivasum flindersi are rare in ANY colour, but the PURE WHITE form is the rarest of all. Exceptional quality for this usually very badly eroded and naturally damaged species, especially at this ultra-big size, with spines and apex in an exemplary overall state of preservation. Fully mature, greatly recurved and expansive columella ?shield? with live-collected gloss. Retention of original operculum. The specimen was collected by the late Peter Clarkson, (author of ?Australia?s Spectacular Cowries?), however, no original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen, as Clarkson never wrote labels for Altivasum flindersi, being particular about guarding the locality of the species, as he was the only diver who had discovered the restricted area in which this species inhabits a diveable depth. All known specimens, prior to his explorations, came from trawling and lobster pots. Clarkson did, however, subsequently reveal, (via pers. comm.), the locality at a later date, so the data below may be regarded as accurate. The species, when encountered alive, is so heavily encrusted with algae and sponges as to be virtually undetectable amongst its habitat, and it was only via the ?eye? and experience of Clarkson that this discovery was made. The specimen was expertly and painstakingly cleaned by Clarkson, and is remarkably devoid of all substrate encrustation, revealing the true beauty of the shell. The few known pure white, live-collected examples now appear upon the market only in those rare instances when deaccessioned from high-end private collections. An important specimen from two pre-eminent collections, and a rare opportunity to create your own price for a very high-value shell. Size: 140 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off Cape le Grand, Esperance, Western Australia, Australia; upon sand/gravel substrate amongst algae and seagrass; 12-18 m; dived; 2001. Provenance: 1) Peter Clarkson private collection, Port Lincoln, South, Australia, Australia; 2) JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
