Note | Now that we have conducted a significant amount of ROV collecting I am of the opinion the shell known as Altivasum flindersi is in fact two separate species. We find an occasional long spined specimen in mid range water depths on the continental shelf identical to the large frond specimens taken in shark nets and lobster pots for years. Consistently around the outside edge of the continental shelf we are finding small solid white shells. Both males and females are very much smaller than typical flindersi and consistently spineless and china white in color. We see no inter grade between the two forms. This particular shell was taken in 165 metres of water south west of Augusta. It was live taken and heavily mature. W/O. |
