Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE: This is an extra special sale comprised entirely of exceptional specimens drawn from my private collection, being sold to benefit arts philanthropy, as I am moving in a new collecting direction. These specimens represent innumerable upgrades and highlights of my collecting and dealing career, and in many cases are the finest examples of the species which have ever passed through my hands. Please enjoy this opportunity to acquire many outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ECHINOPHORIA KURODAI: This is the BEST specimen I have seen from the recently discovered population. From the several choice examples I acquired, this was the standout giant. It has spent a brief period in my private collection for study and appreciation, and I now offer it for the Cassidae specialist or admirer of exquisite seashells. Specimens of the Australian form, (the most beautiful incarnation of the species), were first collected during the legendary 1980s trawls off the atolls of Rowley Shoals, off the North-Western coast, and have not been readily available for the past thirty plus years, being obtainable only from old collections. Only a couple of months ago, new extreme deep-water trawling was undertaken off a more southerly area of the Western Australian coast and has produced some spectacular fresh examples of this species, even more beautiful than those discovered in the 1980s. Specimens from this new population exhibit incredible colours, (richer than those from the 1980s locality): an indescribably beautiful admixture of peach, fawn, orange-ochre and pinkish white, with reddish caramel accents at the outer apertural lip. Particularly well-developed nodes. Extremely high overall quality, with perfect outer apertural lip and siphonal canal, the latter being extremely rare for this delicate trawled species. Size: 76.9 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Carnarvon, Western Australia, Australia; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 400-600 m; trawled; January 2018. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
