Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 2: Part two of my extra special sale comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ZOILA FRIENDI THERSITES: This important specimen, from the western end of the subspecies range, represents a rare intermediate with the nominate subspecies. This form, much discussed by the late Peter Clarkson, (pers. comm.), whilst retaining many elements of the more easterly, classic thersites, exhibits a decidedly elongate form, in conjunction with the markedly attentuated and recurved terminals of friendi friendi, (see above left image). Beautiful dorsal pattern, including a broad, well-defined mantle line; maculae coalescing into bands; and of superb balance. A few micro-irregularities only, but of exemplary overall quality. Definitely for the Zoila specialist whose collection yet lacks this rare and important form. Size: 78.1 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Fowler’s Bay region of Great Australian Bight, South Australia, Australia; upon sponge, upon limestone reef substrate; 20-24 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
