Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Umbilia armeniaca andreyi - Shallow Water Dwarf !!! , Lorenz & Beales 2013 |
Size | 69.7 mm |
Locality | Augusta, WA |
Note | As I have mentioned in a previous posting we find a significantly higher portion of dead shells in deep water than in shallow water. This is due to the lack of water movement on the sea floor due to wave action in comparison to shallow water. I elect to offer these shells to collectors rather than discard them. This does not imply that live taken shells are in abundance. This particular specimen was collected in 138 metres of water SW of Augusta. Most andreyi we find on the upper slope in depths of 220 to 280 metres. Occasionally we find a specimen on the continental shelf in shallower water. These shells are always smaller than their deep water counter parts. This particular shell is very pale similar to the type specimens collected off Mandurah. The shell was originally gem but now shows some gloss abrasion as can be seen in the photos. Its appearance in hand is significantly better than in the photos which magnify all defects. To date we have collected very few of this pale "type form". DEAD TAKEN SHELL. |
