NameEricusa fulgetrum dictua - THE REAL THING , (Sowerby I, 1825)
Size130.8 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteEXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 5: Part five of my extra special sales comprised mainly of exceptional specimens from my private collection, (indicated with JES provenance in description). Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ERICUSA FULGETRUM DICTUA: My only two specimens of the true dictua variety are offered in this auction. Both exhibit beautiful colours - the slightly smaller of the pair with a nebulous 'sunray' pattern to columella. Fully mature 'rolled' and glossed outer apertural lip. Typical, extremely minor natural fraying to siphonal canal, with no artificial smoothing. Verco's varietal names provide a useful identification of the various colour and pattern forms of this highly variable, endemic southern Australian species, however, they have become rather muddled and misapplied by many collectors and dealers over the years, who have not taken the trouble to consult the original source documents. To clarify the dictua form, so that collectors, (whether bidding, or simply for reference), may make a direct comparison with the two examples here illustrated, I quote the following salient points from Verco's original description of this variety: ' ... covered with a fine network of a light yellowish-brown tint, formed by close-set axial lines of small transverse arrowhead and reticulate markings ... At the suture in the body whorl, these lines end as small blotches of deeper colour ... in the spire whorls, just above the suture, are distant, transverse, oblong spots ... ' . Size: 130.8 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon coarse sand/rubble substrate, at night; 26 m; dived; 1994. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
