Item | # 0002100012 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Umbilia armeniaca andreyi - "porcelaina Form" , Lorenz & Beales 2013 |
Size | 65.0 mm |
Locality | Augusta, WA |
Note | Crabbed shell taken in 132 metres of water south west of Augusta. Most andreyi we find are 200 to 250 metres on the shoulder at the top of the continental shelf. Occasionally we find a shell inshore on the continental shelf which are invariably a lot smaller than their deeper water counterparts. This shell shows the china white base with a hint of a mauve basal spot that is characteristic of the shells I have taken the liberty for referring to as "porcelaina". It is clearly in dead condition with nacre pitting. The anterior canal has a massive chip from a crab or fish attack. This damage has been covered by a fresh layer of nacre indicating it survived the attach. This shell is in poor condition but still a representative example of a rare shell that if in live gem condition I would price at around 3000 EUR. |
