Size13.1 mm
LocalityAustralia
NoteEXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 7: Part seven of my current extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. PROTOTYPHIS ANGASI: Two live-collected specimens of rare colour forms of this diminutive, endemic south-eastern Australian species are offered in this sale: vivid red-orange, and rich yellow-ochre. Fully mature, with well-formed varical spines. Glassy protoconch intact. The specimen was collected by the late Peter Clarkson, (author of ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’), although note that no original Clarkson label accompanies the specimen, as it was amongst a group of specimens of numerous colour forms, for which one label served all. Clarkson provenance is however, automatically established, as he was the acknowledged expert in the discovery of the habitat, and collection of, rare colour forms of this elusive species. Painstakingly cleaned by Clarkson to reveal the exquisite beauty of the rare colours. The South Australian form represents the most exquisite incarnation of the species, (particularly those discovered by Clarkson in the region of Port Lincoln). Definitely for the Muricidae specialist. Size: 13.1 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Off Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon coarse sand/rubble substrate, at night; 34 m; dived; 1999. Provenance: 1. Peter Clarkson collection, Port Lincoln, South Australia, Australia; 1998; 2. JES private collection, Melbourne/London.
