Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 7: Part seven of my current extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. RANELLA TABULATA FRIGIDULA: The largest and BEST specimen I have ever handled of the markedly slender and elongate northern form of this endemic south-eastern Australian species. The name frigidula was introduced by Iredale to separate the distinctly slender, more graceful NSW form from broader examples from more southerly localities. (Iredale introduced frigidula under the species waterhousei, now synonymised with tabulata via the priority of Menke's specific name.) Big size. Completely clean, without any trace of the usual erosion or encrustation. Perfection, save invariable natural tiny loss at apex at this big size. Delicate sculpture readily discernible. For the Ranellidae specialist who requires a first-rate example of this form. Size: 90.4 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Twofold Bay, New South Wales, Australia; upon mud/sand/rubble substrate; 40-60 m; dredged; 1984. |
