Note | SPECIAL SALE - PART 8: Part eight of my current special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. ALTIVASUM FLINDERSI: This is the BEST specimen of the South Australian form I have ever handled where maturity of the columellar 'shield' and apertural lip are concerned. Massive, incredibly thickened, recurved columellar 'shield' and crenulated, recurved outer apertural lip in pure white, contrasting to spectacular aesthetic effect with the ultra-rich orange exterior. Ultra-high, live-collected gloss to shield and lip, as if fashioned from pure white porcelain. Although always with exterior erosion commensurate with great age, the current specimen exhibits a minimum of such. The absolute 'top of the line' for the admirer of this exquisite endemic southern Australian species. Supremely difficult to obtain like this. A 'museum piece' of conchology. Size: 109 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off Hopkins Island, Thorny Passage, Port Lincoln, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon coarse sand/rubble substrate, at night; 20 m; dived; 1993. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
