Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. RANELLA AUSTRALASIA: For Ranellidae specialists, I offer an opportunity in this auction to acquire EVERY variety of the deep-water form of australasia - my entire set of five shells, all of exceptional quality for this usually very rough form. Specimen 5: This white, patternless, deep-water form, exhibiting well-developed nodes, is usually referred to as 'kurtzei' within Australian collections, (now correctly regarded as a synonym of australasia), but I use the name tentatively here, as I have not been able to access Cotton's original 1957 description in my preparations for this auction. The form certainly bears characteristics which separate it from both the intertidal form, and the more typical deep-water form. Little known outside of Australian collections. Large size. Hypermature, with markedly thickened, flaring outer apertural lip, with delicate outer edge in a superb state of preservation. Ultra-clean, with no encrustation. Size: 103.7 mm (length). Grading: F+++. Data: Off Eden, New South Wales, Australia; upon mud/sand substrate; 120-160 m; trawled; 1983. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
