NamePugilina carnaria - UNIQUE; EXCEPTIONAL , (Röding, P.F., 1798)
Size147.5 mm, w/o
LocalityIndia
NoteNOTE: Special sales dispersing exceptional specimens from my private collection, along with highlights from my high quality stock, will continue indefinitely, without this initial notice. PUGILINA CARNARIA: A completely unique specimen of this uncommon and seldom offered species, in which the peripheral tubercules, rather than assuming the typical form of blunt-pointed nodes, have developed as slightly bifurcated, double nodes, separated by a broad, depressed channel, which, as it traverses each node, lends these protrusions the appearance of an intercondylar fossa. This aberration has occurred with supreme regularity throughout the growth of the shell, so that, despite being a 'freak', the overall form is completely balanced, as if this were an entirely typical characteristic. Extremely solid, with great weight to size ratio. A few sporadic typical predatory holes and marks, and dredge roughness and loss to outer apertural lip. (Further images available upon request.) The specimen was collected in 1980, at the outset of the glory days of Indian abundance, and the species was not seen for several decades thereafter, until a few fresh specimens were discovered in 2010. A unique example for the collector of atypical shells. Size: 147.5 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Kayalpatnam, Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu, India; 30-50 m; dredged; 1980.
