Item | # 0002179350 | Family | Cerithiidae | Name | Pseudovertagus clava - NEW OFFICIAL WRS; SUPERB , Gmelin, 1791 |
Size | 119.98 mm, w/o |
Locality | Society Islands |
Note | Just touching 120 mm, this magnificent giant surpasses the current official World Record Size by over 2 mm. (Information verified at wrs-shells.com upon 3 May 2019). It is also vastly superior to the current official WRS example, exhibiting ultra-rich colour: caramel pattern across an ivory ground, with ochre-orange edging to aperture. Massively thickened, fully mature outer apertural lip and columellar 'shield'. Ultra-clean, with no typical encrustation. Always with minor loss at apex. This fabulous specimen was formerly in the renowned Bob Foster collection of California, USA, and the original Foster label accompanies the specimen. I worked a lot with Bob during the 1980s and 1990s, and I recall him extolling the virtues of this particular specimen as being the best Tahitian example he had ever seen. Now very difficult to obtain from this locality, coming only from old collections. Size: 119.98 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off Huahine, Tahiti, Society Islands; upon coarse sand/rubble substrate, in reef channel; 30 m; dived; June 1980. Provenance: 1. Bob Foster collection; Santa Barbara; 1990s; 2. JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
