Item | # 0002394542 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Livonia roadnightae - UNIQUE , (McCoy, 1881) |
Size | 127.2 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An utterly UNIQUE specimen of the solid Victorian form, in which the outer apertural lip is flattened, greatly expanded, and markedly recurved, creating a shelf-like projection, reminiscent of certain fossil Livonia species. Although an aberrance, it is formed cleanly, and with extreme regularity, such as to appear completely normal, were we not cognisant of the usual form assumed. The Victorian form is far more solid than that of South Australia, and comes from a particularly rough habitat, consequently typically exhibiting serious and unsightly damage. The current specimen exhibits minor irregularities, one tiny predatory mark, and regenerated loss at the siphonal canal - negligible when weighed against its unique nature. Definitely for the Volutidae specialist, or collector of 'out of the ordinary' seashells. Size: 127.2 mm (length). Grading: F++. Data: Off Portland, Victoria, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-100 m; trawled; 1989. |
