Item | # 0002398688 | Family | Trochidae | Name | Calliostoma rubiginosum - SUPERB; THE REAL THING , Valenciennes, 1846 |
Size | 25.7 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A superb specimen of what is probably Australia's most beautiful Calliostoma. The above large and detailed image illustrates the incredibly beautiful nature of its colour and sculpture. NOTE: The more readily obtainable Calliostoma armillata is often misrepresented as rubiginosus, but this is the REAL THING. When a comparison is made between the two species, (facilitated here by my offering of C. armillata in the current auction), there is no confusing the two, exhibiting, as they do, quite different colour and sculpture. C. rubiginosus has a more bead-like sculpture; a more varied palette, with three readily discernible pink spiral bands per whorl; and a more acute apical angle. C. rubiginosus is also rarer, especially from the deep-water, no longer fished locality of the current specimen. For the Calliostomatidae specialist, or admirer of exquisite seashells. Size: 25.7 mm (longest dimension). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Nuyts Archipelago, off Ceduna, South Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 60-80 m; trawled; 1999. |
