Item | # 0002542205 | Family | Terebridae | Name | Terebra achates - RARE; OUTSTANDING , Weaver, 1960 |
Size | 110 mm |
Locality | Hawai'ian Islands |
Note | An absolutely OUTSTANDING ultra-large specimen of this rare, endemic Hawai’ian species - one of the most sought after and desirable of all the Terebridae. The two rows of nodules below the sutures, and the succeeding fine, punctate spiral bands, easily separate it from subulata, and both characteristics are readily discernible when one experiences a magnificent, large, live-collected example, such as the current specimen. Now obtainable only from choice old collections, and almost never at this size and quality. The BEST and ONLY specimen of this rarity from the JES collection. Extremely rare PERFECTION, in an already rare and seldom offered species. (In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the specimen comes from one of the most famous, or infamous, localities of the twentieth century.) Size: 110 mm (length). Grading: Gem. Data: Pearl Harbour Channel, off Ford Island, Pearl Harbour, Oahu, Hawai’ian Islands; upon sand substrate, at night; 12 m; dived; 1983. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
