| Note | At virtually 122 mm, this exceedingly rare GIANT – of a size approaching the limit for the subspecies – is the LARGEST specimen of the JES Collection, and one of the 2-3 largest I have ever encountered. Such ‘super’ giants were only collected during the 1970s, by Taiwanese trawling operations undertaken off the northern Australian coast. Such examples are typically prone to substantial damage during life; do not readily form a regular pattern; and suffer affitional damage during the trawling process. The current specimen is a rare exception. It exhibits only very restricted trawl loss at the anterior – negligible when measured alongside the rarity and beauty of the specimen, and almost undetectable in display. Supremely well-formed pattern, especially for such an old age giant, as the pattern in any ultra-large specimen tends to be wayward as a result of the ‘stop-start’ growth of advanced old age. The current specimen, by contrast, has grown without pause to this immense size, and has also formed a pattern of regularity and great beauty. Exceedingly few ‘old boat’ specimens of this ENORMOUS size were collected. A museum piece of conchology, and a ‘collector’s item’. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist seeking the fullest expression of this deep-water subspecies, or the dedicated collector of giant-sized shells.
