| Note | Please refer to the text / photos of other andreyi posted on this auction. I believe that andreyi off the Augusta area represent a hybrid population where south coast and west populations have merged after a period of isolation. All specimens we have collected off the Augusta area fit as andreyi on the basis of weight / volume measurements but fall into two distinct color forms. Those with pink/apricot bases and those with china white bases. This specimen is the later and the color form I have taken the liberty of referring to as the "porcelaina form". It was live taken but graded Fine+/Fine++ as it has a piece of dorsal nacre that has been dislodged as indicated by the green arrow. The issue has been well re-glazed by the animal making it a healed natural defect. The two intense dark spots are something we see occasionally in andreyi. I believe there is a view in the collecting community that we have found large numbers of andreyi and that in the future prices will drop significantly. It is true that we have found them is limited numbers on the flanks of a couple of undersea sea mounts but not in abundance. The bottom line is that with the depth, strong ocean currents, weather and the cost of operating large vessels and crew, we will not target them unless we can sell them at a reasonable price. |
