| Note | This outstanding ancient GIANT was collected from a remote Great Barrier Reef locality in 1968. The locality has been protected since 1975. Several other species are regularly misidentified as reticulata, (especially A. chemnitzi), but reticulata is separated by FIVE features, which, when one is made aware of them, make its separation from chemnitzi and related species an easy matter: 1) a different shell shape, (more ovate overall, with a straighter posterior side); 2) a sturdy, reticulate external sculpture, (as opposed to fine lamellae); 3) reticulata is MUCH more solid and heavy; 4) reticulata has only brown flecks arranged in broken rays, (not a caramel zigzag pattern, as seen in A. chemnitzi); and finally, the most readily discernible of all diagnostic features, 5) reticulata has a RICH ORANGE INTERNAL HINGE AREA, (see above right image), (in A. chemnitzi and related species this area is the same colour as the internal surface). A. reticulata is also capable of attaining a MUCH larger size, as illustrated by the current giant. (I also offer a superb giant A. chemnitzi in this sale for direct comparison.) Enormous size. Hypermature, with incredible weight to size ratio. Exemplary quality for such advanced size and age. Size: 86.2 mm (longest dimension). Grading: Gem.
