Item | # 0002839087 | Family | Conidae | Name | Conus anemone peronianus - ULTRA-RARE FORM , Iredale, 1931 |
Size | 68.1 mm, w/o |
Locality | Australia |
Note | This rare and highly beautiful form is the least known of all anemone forms. It is represented by an isolated population, at a very rare locality, and I would wager that almost no Conidae specialist has encountered it previously, as virtually all of the known specimens are distributed amongst 3-4 highly specialised, preeminent Australian collections. To my knowledge, no other specimen of this rare form has previously been offered upon the world market. Extremely broad at the whorl periphery, creating a distinctly pyriform outline when viewed dorsally. Exquisite delicate pinkish lavender, with a florid pattern of ochre-caramel. Tiny Marum Island is amongst the Sir Joseph Banks Group, in South Australia, and few shells have been collected at this locality over the decades. An opportunity for an advanced Conidae specialist to obtain a superior example of this little known form. Size: 68.1 mm (length). Grading: F+++; w/o. Data: Off West coast of Marum Island, Sir Joseph Banks Group, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia; upon granite reef substrate, upon granite boulder; 12 m; dived; 19 November 1996. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
