Note | The Humboldt squid, Dosidicus gigas, is a large squid which is commonly found offshore and caught by fishermen in Chile and PerĂº. The present specimen contains the beak, radula and part of mandible muscles of a large specimen (mantle lenght of about 1.20 m) of Humboldt squid washed ashore at Caldera, northern Chile. The beak and radula was fixed in ethanol and kept wet with ethanol and glycerol. The measurement of 44 mm is only from the tip of the beak to its basis (upper rostral lenght), but the specimen is larger than that (about 67 mm in maximum dimensions). This is your opportunity to obtain a nice and interesting Natural History item for your collection: see that a slightly larger specimen of the same species was auctioned for 1100 usd at Heritage Auctions (https://fineart.ha.com/itm/zoology/osteology/giant-humboldt-squid-beak/a/810091-81049.s) |
