NoteCHECKERBOARD…….CORRUGATED…….EXTREMELY RARE…..A case where reflections play a vital role in assessing the checkerboard facets. Take a few moments to appreciate this endearing feature. Few mappa, if any, match the precise geometric intricacy. Once in every blue moon, we see a shell boasting equal lines, shaping the shell into equal zones. Rarer, the equal zones are square, like a checkerboard. Such an example is this. What makes the aforementioned more exceptional again is that the borders of each square are raised from the rest of the surface, as if the animal has decided to draw attention to this checkerboard phenomenon, creating one of the most remarkably attractive cypraea. The image does some justice, wherein reflections help identify some of the checkers that cover the dorsum. One can see that the lines forming the square zones are not only in the shape but also in the pattern. Only in the hand does one truly appreciate this masterpiece by Mother Nature. An orange ventrum and radiantly lustrous dusty-pink base is a further bonus. Rostrated. Bulb-shaped. Glassy. Ultra-mature. Ultra-heavy, with a surprising weight to size ratio (a much loved trait with checkerboards). A grand rarity in one of the most important cowries, the beloved mappa. Grade: Gem-. Provenance: from my own collection. Diver taken; 20m; off the west coast of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
