Umbilia armeniaca Image Not Available68.9 mm Augusta, WA 84,00 € |
|
Item | # 0003056825 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Umbilia armeniaca , Verco, 1912 |
Size | 68.9 mm |
Locality | Augusta, WA |
Note | During our ROV activity
we run across quite a few
very dead shells laying on
the bottom. When shells
die at depth, they are not
worn away by wave action
as wave action does not
extend much beyond 120
metres or so. They simply
lay there until they are
carried away by a hermit
crab, dissolve back into
sea water or a buried to
become fossils. We retain
some of these, clean them
up and offer them on the
auction as we feel
someone will appreciate
them as a scientific
specimen. This specimen
is a crabbed shell found
crawling among sponges
in 140 metres of water
south of Augusta in
December 2022.
It is in pretty good shape
for a crabbed shell with siphons intact, lovely colouring to base and a tiny hole to left hand side of dorsum as shown in photos.
