| Note | One complete set of valves of the largest of the chitons, Cryptochiton stelleri (Middendorff, 1847), a species which apparently can grow up to 36 cm in lenght. Different from most chitons, the valves in this species are completely covered by the girdle, which is usually much larger and of redish, brownish or orange color. These valves come from an old collection: this specimen was collected by a diver on a rock reef at 50 feet off Monterrey, California.
The valves in natural state (imbricated) measure about 160 mm, but extended (as in the images) measure about 200 mm.
A rare finding, very few offered in the past, and a very interesting and nice Natural History Item. |
