Item | # 0003135141 |
Family | LANDSNAILS |
Name | Plectostylus elegans - Very rare, very Endemic , (Pfeiffer, 1842) |
Size | 29 mm |
Locality | Huasco, northern Chile |
Note | This is a very nice specimen of the very rare species Plectostylus elegans. This species was described as a Succinea, due to its thin fine shell, and was later sinonimized with Plectostylus elegans, a much more robust and larger species. However it is currently recognized as a good species, and its distribution is restricted to a small area of coastal northern Chile, where it is rare to find. This particular specimen was collected fresh dead and it is preserved in excellent condition for the species, having also its original periostracum with a very distinguishable pattern (different from all other Plectostylus species). Unfortunately the shell has some damage to the border of the lip, but overall the specimen is in excellent condition. |
