Name | Gigantidas mauritanicus - Very Rare, Interesting , (von Cosel, 2002) |
Size | 69 mm |
Locality | Off Nouakchott, Mauritania |
Note | One very nice specimen of the rare deep water chemosymbiothic mussel Gigantidas mauritanicus (von Cosel, 2002). This specimen was collected trawled by fishermen in 1000 m depth of Nouakchott, Mauritania. This species apparently lives in cold seeps in northern Africa to southern Europe, being one of the few Gigantidas species found in the area. Gigantidas is a genus of deep water chemosymbiothic mussels associated with cold seeps (methane emanations on the sea floor) or with hydrothermal vents, where they thrive. Finding these species is difficult, as they live in dense spots in only a few locations, being only collected by trawls or by chance in deep water fisheries. A very rare and interesting natural history item. A similar specimen, although larger than the present, was recently auctioned for 150 euro at Conchology Inc. |
