Item | # 0003186808 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Mauritia mauritiana hawaiiensis - RARE PATTERN , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 97.5 mm |
Locality | North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii |
Note | Extraordinary hyper-glazed nacre and astounding unique slate grey algae pigmented pattern under this nacre ia a rare variation of this common Indo-Pacific species. However, the coloration and mottled pattern are anything but common in large Hawaiian cowries, providing this particular specimen with an absolutely different and amazing appearance..... almost suggestive of a newly encountered subspecies. Humpies with this type of coloration in good condition are rare and highly collectable. The shell is characterized by a humped dorsum, calloused and flanged marginal morphology, with perfect extremities and a high weight/size ratio. Collected on night dive by Michael Mangum at 1-2 meters in the high crash zone inside a large rock crevice in 2018 off North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii. The humpy exhibits a few subnacre blisters on the base and a glossed over mid-dorsum white 2 mm shallow crater. Grade: F+++. |
