| Note | During our ROV activity we run
across quite a few very dead
shells laying on the bottom.
When shells die at depth, they
are not worn away by wave
action as wave action does not
extend much beyond 120
metres or so. They simply lay
there until they are carried
away by a hermit crab, dissolve
back into sea water or are
buried to become fossils. We
retain some of these, clean
them up and offer them on the
auction as we feel someone
will appreciate them as a
scientific specimen. This crabbed
kostini was found laying on sand in a sponge
garden in 210 metres of water
west south west of Dongara in
February 2023. Both siphons
are intact, all over nacre loss and a sunroof the result of a champagne crab getting acquainted to the hermit crab inhabitant. |
