Item | # 0003234067 |
Family | Ranellidae |
Name | Priene scabrum , (P. P. King, 1832) |
Size | 46 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | A nice specimen of Priene scabrum. This is a selected specimen, with a very nice shell with minimal flaws (mostly in the rugose lip) and without periostracum. Priene scabrum is the only representative of the genus Priene, a genus endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This is the only Ranellidae found in northern Chile. The shell of this species is usually in very bad condition, with broken protoconch and eroded first whorls. They also have a thick but dehiscent brown hairy periostracum, which hiddens the very nice spiral and axial sculpture in this species. This particular shell is interesting as it has no varices and it has a light brown color. |
