Item | # 0003241082 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella costata - Rare, Large , Lesson, 1831 |
Size | 80.7 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice and selected specimen of Fissurella costata, a rather rare species, in excellent condition for the species. Large Fissurella species are actively collected by fishermen with hooks, so they often have nicks and damage on the border of the lip, but this particular specimen is in very good condition, with just a few tiny nicks in the lip, and with a natural uncleaned dorsum still covered by whitish calcareous and brownish algae, which can be cleaned further). This species is hard to find in good condition, as it lives in the surf zone in difficult to reach areas, and it has a sharp lip that breaks easily when collected. This is a rather rare species, and very rare to find in this very good condition. They are always found with the dorsum fully covered with calcareous algae. An interesting large species of Fissurella from the southeastern Pacific at a rather low price. Apparently WRS for this species is only a few mm larger. |
