Note | Bathybembix humboldti Rehder, 1971 is a rare deep water species (200-1480 m depth) which is found from Ecuador to Chile. This species is only found as bycatch in shrimp and prawn trawls and it is very rare, as the fishermen here in Chile consume them and discard their shells. The shell of this species is found almost always without the protoconch and first whorls in adult specimens, while juvenile specimens retain sometimes the first whorls. This selected specimen was live-collected trawled in 320 m depth off Valparaiso, central Chile and it is in particularly very good condition for the species, retaining part of its earlier whorls and its periostracum and having a nice lip with little damages as it can be seen in the photos. This is your opportunity to obtain a very rare species for a low price, although in a slightly smaller size. |
