Note | A nice and large live-collected shell of Bathybembix humboldti Rehder, 1971 (Height=56 mm, Width=50 mm). This is a rare deep water and large Calliotropidae species (200-1480 m depth) which is found from Ecuador to Chile. This species is only found as bycatch in shrimp and prawn trawls and it is very rare, as the fishermen here in Chile consume them and discard their shells. The shell of this species is found almost always decollated, without the protoconch and first whorls in adult specimens, while juvenile or smaller specimens retain sometimes the first whorls. This selected specimen was collected alive trawled in 320 m depth in prospective trawls off Valparaiso, central Chile and it is in particularly very good condition for the species, retaining part of its ealier whorls and its periostracum, and having a nice lip with some damage as can be seen in the images. Note that this specimen has a tiny pinhole which is not noticeable. This is your opportunity to obtain a very rare species for a low price. |
