Item | # 0003339001 |
Family | Angaridae |
Name | Angaria sphaerula , Kiener, 1873 |
Size | 77 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | F++/+++. A large and much better than usual "winged" A. sphaerula. This is a famous species that was already described by Albertus Seba (1734). The Seba specimens were sold to Peter the Great, the Russian Tsar. Later Dance traced the history of this species and we had to wait until the 1970s before the shells became available to collectors. It is a very beautiful species: here we are talking about the form that occurs on the island of Panglao in the south of Bohol, which is very red, sometimes with only curled "wings" like this shell. The sphaerula from Panglao are also known to be larger than those from the island of Balut.
Philippines. Bohol. Panglao Island. 100-150 m. 2011.
