Item | # 0003360921 |
Family | Cypraeidae |
Name | Zoila jeaniana aurata - Brute !!! , L. Raybaudi, 1979 |
Size | 82.0 mm |
Locality | Coral Bay |
Note | ROV collected from 168 metres of water off Coral Bay in Western Australia during April 2024. A brute of an aurata with a high domed dorsum and a distinct mantle line.
There is no wave action on the bottom in depths over 130 metres or so and shells are not worn away by wave action. They lay on the bottom and very slowly dissolve back into the ocean or are buried to become fossils. The first stage of this process is when small white spots start appearing in the shells nacre as is the case on the sides of this shell. Eventually these become pin holes as is seen in long dead and fossil specimens. Large boofy dead collected shell that displays nicely. |
