| Note | A LARGE NIPPONENSIS. It made some difficulty to identify this magnificent and large “nipponensis”, which is probably the WRS size, as the WRS for nipponensis is not nipponensis, but another cassis species. See: www.wrs-shells.com. The double fold in the columellar callus is typical, and the combination of shape, fine texture of the shell, warm orange-brown translucent surface, and the spots below the suture leave no doubt: a nipponensis, now a valid species. This beautiful deep-sea cassis lives from Japan south to the Philippines and was only discovered in 1968. Plausible WRS size, very large, very beautiful, but with a microscopic octopus hole in the tip (seen here above the lower suture between the second and third dark spot, just above - does not detract from the charm of the shell). Most nipponensis are only a few centimeters long.
