Item | # 0003383811 | Family | POLIPLACOPHORA | Name | Acanthopleura echinata - Nice, hard to obtain , (Barnes, 1824) |
Size | 135 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | These are the complete set of eight valves of a 135-145 mm specimen of Acanthopleura echinata which was washed ashore fresh dead at Caldera, northern Chile. As this was a rather large specimen, some of the valves are a bit of erosion and a little damage (as can be seen in the photos), which is natural for this large Chiton species which lives in high energy areas of the intertidal and shallow subtidal. The valves are also partially covered with brown algae, which can be cleaned further. This is one of the largest Chiton species in the southeastern Pacific, I have seen alive specimens with a size of about 20 cm, but they are rather uncommon and hard to collect in situ. This is your opportunity to have a nice specimen of one of the largest chitons in the southeastern Pacific. |
