Note | TWO YOUNG GENUINE MAXIMUS: The one with the line is a wonder of nature! No other mussel in the world has influenced human art as much as the Saint-Jacques mussel, which goes by the scientific name Pecten maximus. The species lives from Norway to Gibraltar in the Atlantic. In the Mediterranean, its niche is occupied by its sister species Pecten jacobaeus. The Pecten maximus was the symbol of the Pelgrims who traveled to Compostella in Spain. They all carried this shell, and even today you can find thousands of real and fake shells made of iron, wood, steel, copper etc. along the "chemins" to Compostella, indicating the right way. These shells are selected from many thousands of specimens: these Maximus are caught every winter under very controlled conditions in the bay of St. Brieuc, and the chance of finding one like the specimens presented here is close to zero.
33 mm, 32.7 mm.
