Item | # 0003384945 | Family | Pectinidae | Name | Pecten jacobaeus - SPECIAL COLOR , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 69.9 mm |
Locality | Greece |
Note | FILLED WITH SPECTACULAR COLORS, YET THIS IS A JACOBAEUS. Even in very specialized shell collections there are not many, perhaps not a single Jacobaeus with a colored convex valve. In this rare case, the upper valve is actually dark on the apex and fades to pink on the top of the shell, with a broad brown band with gray and purple shading around the edge. The flat valve in this case is not the usual pale reddish brown, but a very dark lilac brown. This is definitely a museum piece, and a special piece for the collection of European shells and the shell collection alike.
Greece. Thermaikos Bay. Aegean Sea. Dived alive. On muddy bottom. 15 m. May 2017.
