GEM. THE FORMER NOBILIS WITH SCALES. If you visit popular marketplaces along the Japanese coast, you will most likely encounter vendors baking beautiful colored large scallops in their proper valves in small fires. This is quite an expensive delicacy in Japan. The scallops are ruined by the fire and are then thrown away. Especially with the lemon-yellow giants, this is a tear in the heart of the mussel collector at any time.
Crassicostata is the modern name for the former "nobilis" of Reeve. What few people know is that wild-caught nobilis have scales. This is one such shell with most of the scales in perfect condition. It is also a rare specimen with a color pattern, whereas most Nobilis are either solid yellow, orange or purple. Perfectly scaled Crassicostata are so rare that shell enthusiasts are willing to dig deep into their pockets for impressive specimens in Europe.
