| Note | Graceful, heavy and amazingly rare pinstriped specimen. This is a terrific foliatum, with a spiraling brown revolving band gracefully following the tabulated spire anatomy. The moderately large sized specimen exhibits exceptional expanded winged varices and notable fluting and gutters. The strongly reflected thick varices complement and blend seamlessly into the mellow light chestnut brown body whorl flowing with the fine brown pin stripes. This beautiful shell shows superb form and symmetry. Captured at the base/periphery of a kelp forest by the late, great Scuba diver Paul Kanner at 18-20 meters off the west end of San Nicolas Island, California in the late 90's. The aperture lip, protoconch, spire and body whorl are intact. There is abrasion of one flute on the leading varix edge. Grade: GEM minus. |
