F++. EXTREME RARITY FROM THE DEPTHS. This is a very nice, large species that lives in the depths around Balut Island. Only 100 and 150 have been caught since about 1970, but only a few alive. Sadao Kosuge described this pretty neogastropod in honor of Victor Dan from Manila. The species was described as Buccinidae in the genus Siphonofusus in the Bulletin of the Institute of Malacology no. 2(10). Three specimens, one holotype and two paratypes, already confirmed the unique shape and coloration, but in all three shells the siphonal canal and part of the opening are heavily filed. They also all three show the white axial stripe typical of Vicdani, as seen here. Chen continues in the 2003 Pei-Yo with a very dead piece shown in color. Later publications: Mallard & Robin in the 2005 book on Fasciolariidae as “Latirus vicdani”. They forgot the brackets used for this stately subgenus Siphonofusus and show a specimen missing several millimeters of the aperture. Later, Snyder & Callomon (2008) in Poppe put “Fasciolaria” in brackets as the genus. The shell shown here from the collections of Conchology, Inc. is quite complete, but also has damage to the siphonal canal. Of all the specimens shown in the literature, none can match the quality of the present Vicdani. The white stripe can be seen on all pieces ever illustrated, so this is quite natural.
