Item# 0003420303
FamilyFasciolariidae
NameCinctura salasi - VERY RARE , Petuch & Berschauer(2023)
Size70.92 mm
LocalityCelestĂșn, Yucatan, Mexico
NoteA true rarity. From the type locality. This is the first time this species has ever been offered in the market. I had the honor of having this species named after my last name; Salas, after discovering it was a new species. The species has never been collected or documented alive, so all the known specimens are dead finds. Ever since the description of the species came out, we have tried to obtain live specimens from the local fishermen, but to no avail, as the species has remained elusive, and no live ones have come up after almost a year of looking for them. In the unusual occasion that a dead specimen shows up, it is usually a badly broken one with barely any visible colors. The specimen offered here is an exception to that, as it still has most of the original gray color of the species, as well as a well-preserved pattern, and its classic orange siphonal canal also with its color well-preserved. I had never offered this species before precisely because of how hard it is to get a decent specimen, so this is a rare and very special opportunity for both Fasciolariidae enthusiasts, as well as collectors of rare shells, to acquire a species that only a handful of people have in their collection. This specimen was found dead two months ago in about 50cm of water, among dead shells and rubble. Condition for the specimen is somewhere between F and F+.
