Note | One very nice and extremelly large (WRS?) live-collected specimen of the very rare Fissurella pulchra, one of the large species of Fissurella endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This species lives in the subtidal in very specific places, on rocks in sandy areas and in very low numbers. Together with F. bridgesi these are the rarest Fissurella species found in Chile and PerĂº (although pulchra is rarer). Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. This particular specimen is extremely large for the species, has a large thick arched shell with a nice dorsum in its natural condition, still covered with some calcareous algae and which can be cleaned further to reveal the particular pattern of this species. The lip and the interior of the shell are perfect, free from boring barnacles or polychaetes or other boring organisms. I can send detailed images if needed. An extraordinary specimen of a rare species of gastropod from the southeastern Pacific. |
