Note | F++/+++. CONCINNA JAPANESE STYLE. Japanese cleaning is the style in which the collector leaves the shells ‘as found in nature’. The lips are not smoothed, the surfaces are not cleaned with acids, adhesions are often left on the shell, even barnacles and algae growth are often still visible. This has the advantage that a thin outer layer of calcareous material, called “intritacalx”, which is only visible on a few mussels, remains untouched. And this is the Fulgoraria concinna, a species endemic to Japan, in pristine condition, not treated with acids and not oiled like most. An excellent piece in good++ condition. The pattern is striking, the whole atmosphere of the shell is appealing. At 166 mm long, this is an extremely large piece. The F. concinna is not particularly rare, but fine+ large pieces with a nice pattern, as seen here, are not easy to find.
Japan. Aichi Prefecture. Off Ganagori City. On mud. 300-350 m. 2017.
